Little Boy dropper dies

Since last Thursday I have to live with these facts…:

- The May Bees recently released their new record “Drop Little Boy” and celebrated it with a party Thursday November 1st 2007.

- Paul Tibbets, the pilot and commander of the B-29 that dropped Little Boy on Hiroshima, Japan, died Thursday November 1st 2007.

Please don’t release a new CD entitled “Death of the Mule” or anything like that. Pretty please . . . .

I have wondered how you would respond to Gen. Tibbetts’s death. Since The Enemy’s Scientist takes us into the mind of the scientist, and not the bomber, I was wondering what took you, as songwriter, from the exploration of that “subatomic world” and questions of space and air along the path to command someone [Tibbetts?] to “Drop Little Boy” and change the world forever.

Except the scientist did the changing, didn’t he? Paul Tibbetts was, at his core, just the deliveryman.

It’s interesting how one man’s death took me even more deeply into your song . . .
